BMW - Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) - Check Digit
Here is the annual breakdown for all non-European BMWs and BMWs older than 2000 according to ISO 3779:
To determine the inspection body (11th character), the following values must be assigned to the VIN characters:
A = 1 J = 1 T = 3
B = 2 K = 2 U = 4
C = 3 L = 3 V = 5
D = 4 M = 4 W = 6
E = 5 N = 5 X = 7
F = 6 P = 7 Y = 8
G = 7 R = 9 Z = 9
H = 8 S = 2
In the second step you have to multiply each value at the position by a certain factor, the following factors apply (9th digit is missing, since it is the inspection body itself):
1 x 8 10 x 9
2 x 7 11 x 8
3 x 6 12 x 7
4 x 5 13 x 6
5 x 4 14 x 5
6 x 3 15 x 4
7 x 2 16 x 3
8 x 10 17 x 2
Now the results are added up and the sum divided by 11. The first digit after the comma is the test number. If the last two digits are after the decimal point 10, the test number becomes an X.
